We purchased this DVD player for our daughter to take on a trip. It seemed to be working fine. Two months go by before she used it again and I noticed that it would only play in black and white. I thought perhaps it was just the movie she was watching. One month later, we are on the plane again and it's only in black and white. My daughter says that's the way it's been since day one. I try a couple of other movies and they are all the same way.

So after 3 uses, Coby will not exchange it for a new one because it only has a 90 day warranty and we've had it for 4 months. Other than that, it's great. Unfortunately Coby does not stand behind this product. Amazon was also of no help as their exchange policy is only 30 days, even though this thing has never worked properly.

I'm giving it a 4 out of 5 stars for two reasons. First, its still new but working great! For the amount (49.99 and free shipping) and within the days we received from ordering online, its definitely a bargain! It plays both DVDs and CDs very, very well.

Second, however, the sound quality is not good. In fact its below average. So, if you're one who would spend dollars on speakers for a complete theatre effect,then this would be worth considering to cut back on.

I bought this dvd player about 6 mos ago and it died. First the remote went out and you can't even manually fast forward or rewind without the remote. That was a headache all in itself having to put the dvd player on pause every time we left the room. This player replaces an older Sony dvd/cd player that was my first foray into an HDMI connection. After many years and hundreds of hours of play the old Sony just got too tired to work any longer and the picture really began to falter. The Sony DVP-NC800H/B gives a really great picture. It can upscale to 1080p according to the spec sheet but my Toshiba 32" LCD only broadcasts in 1080i and 720p but no matter because you can very easily set the output on the player to 720p or 1080i. The 720p looks better to my eyes and so, that is the setting I use. Set up was a very short matter and very easily accomplished. Considering the low price and the very good picture and sound quality...what's not to like? I highly recommend this player. This machine has worked great for me but I have not used it tons and tons. I got this machine because my VCR was broken and I wanted to watch a movie I only had on VHS. It made no sense to get my old cheapy VCR fixed, so that's when I thought it would be good to invest in something that would allow me to play VHS tapes, but more importantly, convert them to DVD.

When I brought the machine home, it was relatively simple to insert a blank DVD, insert the VHS movie, and click the dub button to start playing the movie. I was able to watch the movie while it was copying it to DVD (I made sure not to pause or interrupt the VHS because that would interrupt the recording process). This worked great. When I have time, I'm going to convert all of my other VHS tapes.

Another thing I did successfully was record a movie at its show time directly to DVD. Worked great. Once again, I watched the movie while it was recording.

I have a cable box, which has a couple of outputs. I needed to go to Radio Shack to buy an audio splitter so that the audio could go directly from the cable box to the TV, as well as directly from the cable box to the RDR-VX560. This was unique to my setup, so I'm not saying you will need to do the same thing but just keep in mind you might need some cables and connectors to set things up optimally for ease of use.

There are features, after your record to DVD directly from either VHS or the airwaves/cable, where you can add chapters and titles. I added some basic info without reading the manual. Worked great.

Oh, if you are like me, and have never had a unit like this before, then it might help to know it works in a manner where it burns the DVD while you are playing something to record (i.e., from VHS, airwaves, cable). When whatever is playing is done, you can pause recording. When clicking to eject the DVD, the DVD will be "finalized" (close the recording session). You can also finalize manually via a menu option. I believe you can leave the unfinalized DVD in the recorder, and just keep recording from various sources as you desire, only to finalize when you're ready. Since I've only used it to record whole movies, I have always gotten to the end of the movie, and used the manual menu option to finalize. I have not tried leaving a DVD in the unit to record as needed on a heavy basis. I used it in a small test, and it seems to work well. Pretty cool actually.

I did not see any freezing like the others mentioned. You might call Sony support and ask them about any concerns you have in that regard and whether or not they fixed anything in newer models (maybe I have a newer one, but I bought it about 2 or 3 months ago). I'm not sure if Sony ever sends out firmware updates (i.e., on a special DVD), but you might ask them. Maybe there's a update to fix some software problems which might relate to problems others have reported. This is a complete guess on my part, but I would definitely look into it if I were serious about buying and concerned about the other reviews. I purchased this for my daughter about a year ago. To start everything was great. It's a pain to change out the dvd if you have it all strapped in the car, but no biggie. One good thing about this item is it does have battery. So if you are on that road trip and need to stop for gas but not drag the kids out-they can keep watching.

However, after a few months of owning it started freezing up and just stalling in the middle of the movie. Next thing you know some movies are not playing at all-so it's a guessing game of what is going to work today. Sometimes it will make it through the previews of a movie then just quit, other times we're not so lucky and the thing just won't start at all. I'm now shopping for new.

I guess for the price-you get what you pay for. It did the job for a while, but I don't think I'm going to waste my money on another Coby and time soon.

I bought this as a present for my girlfriend because she had a bunch of old video tapes without a vcr to play them on and her dvd player was terrible (and she lost the remote to it). I shopped around and found this to be the best mix of quality / price.

After using it a few times, it does everything as advertised. Auto-tracking on the tapes was fast and great. We haven't had one that looked bad yet. The remote is super easy to use, and it's very simple to switch between dvd and vcr. The picture's clear (or as clear as a vhs / dvd can be) and the audio is good.

When rewinding vhs tapes, sometimes it makes a really loud noise (to be expected when rewinding at high speeds), but it's never damaged any tapes. The only other possible con is the lack of a built in timer for vhs recording, but come on, get with the times! If you're looking to record programs, get a dvr!

The Pioneer Dv610av has made my life a lot easier. It is hard to believe a machine that sells for such a small price can end up being so very good. I use this unit for DVD's , both factory and home burned, single and dual layer , SACD , CD and DVD-A discs as well. I play loads of AVI files, both DivX and Xvid and it plays them flawlessly from a USB thumb drive.
The upscaling is as good or better than an Oppo machine costing more than twice this price. The sound quality is BETTER than the Oppo (IMHO) and the easy of use and GUI is better as well. Great picture quality adjustment can be found in the menus and submenus. You can dial in the picture quality to the point of near perfection. I got a very good calibration using my DVE disc.
The build quailty is a bit on the cheap side and it is small lightweight unit, but that is deceiving as far as functionality and quality of the audio and video output by this bad boy! For under 150 dollars you simply can not beat this unit. Oh yeah, not only is it region free but it can output in native Pal, NTSC or convert either to the other easily. I use it with a multisystem display and output each format as is for best PQ. BRILLIANT! A shamleless plug for All Region World is in order. Amazon fullfilled the order and everything was as advertised. No matter who you get this from, you really cant go wrong with this machine.
One final word, it was manufactured to be sold to British(and other)tourists while visiting in Japan (apparently) and as such it is very unlikely the Pioneer warranty will be valid here in the US. But at this price, buy two and have 1 for a back up as you wont want to use any other machine once you get spoiled by this thing.

It is a very nice player. Picture quality is good, sound quality is good. It is a bit slow, but Blu Ray disks are not really fast either. It plays only store fabricated disks. We have extensive collection of DVD-+R (in DVD format). It plays only a very limited percentage of these. Pioneer BDP-320 does not play any DivX, mpg, avi, mkv or other type of disks. Too bad. Our good olde Philips DVR plays it all (except mkv) and upconverts as well. Unfortunately, Philips does not play Blu Ray.

Can not be unlocked easily - plays only region 1 and region A disks (DVD and Blu Ray respectively). Can not play PAL disks on our LCD TV (it is NTSC only). Again the old Philips plays any region DVD and will play either PAL or NTSC on our TV.

Bottom line: will be going back to the vendor. For this price, we will get a new Philips BDP5010 and several Blu Ray collections (such as BBC Nature or NatGeo). Apparently BDP5010 can be unlocked easily - will update as available. Very easy to go into the menus and change it right away. Makes standard DVDs look better too. Sonically, I don't know how good it sounds because my high-end tower speakers are put away at the moment because of a toddler in the house. I'm just using some small bookshelf speakers for the time being. I could evaluate it better if I was using the towers. The menus are easy to navigate and Blu-rays look great. I rejected all the Philips DVP series players because of poor reviews I found in other brand reviews (like for other Pioneer players). Many of them said those didnt last long. I am not fond of SONY because SONY has the reputation of being very selective about what it plays and is very fussy when it comes to slightly damaged discs.

I chose this because most Pioneer players had wonderful (if fewer) reviews and I decided to try it out. It arrived fast and it works great. I have used the standard component cables to connect it to my CRT TV and it works great. The unit is very light and sleek (black) and comes with a component cable and two power cables (one for the US socket and the other for the European I assume). I am yet to try the USB input though. The Dv-420vk is one of the newer Pioneer models compared to the 610 and others. I saw this on the Pioneer website selling for around the same price.

One quick tip: look for the other sellers when buying this product because the "featured merchant" seems to be charging a premium for both the product and the shipping. I bought it from NewEra products and it arrived in good time and great shape.

I imagine some of the Mac/Airport issues mentioned in other reviews have to do with the user's network setup. I have a MacBook Pro running the latest version of Leopard and an Airport Extreme Base Station and I did not experience any issues setting up wireless connectivity between my Airport base station and the LG BD390. However, I have read that LG doesn't support Mac users, so you should keep that in mind while making a purchasing decision. If you run into issues, there isn't likely to be any technical support available (hence, the four star review).

My experience has been very positive so far. The player was a cinch to set up. I basically took it out of the box, plugged it into my LG HDTV with the included cables, and followed the onscreen set up instructions. Within minutes, I was able to watch the movies in my NetFlix instant queue and stream videos from YouTube. The quality is outstanding!

The only thing I couldn't do "out of the box" was view media files wirelessly from my Mac, since the product only ships with PC software to enable this capability. Fortunately, I read some of the reviews on other sites and discovered that Mac users can download software to make this functionality work. After weeks of research, I picked up a LG BD390 and haven't looked back since.

Let me start from the beginning. I had just purchased a 55" Vizio LCD TV, capable of full HD (1080p), my old HD TV was DLP based and only capable 1080i. I was using an older Philips DVD player that up-converted to 1080i as well. But, I wanted something that could give me the full 1080p HD experience on my new TV and I wanted something that could handle files as well as BDs and DVDs. My old Philips played MP3, JPEG, PNG, AVI, WMA, DivX-HD, XVID, MKV files and more. More importantly it had a USB port that you could plug a FAT32 flash drive or external HD into and it could read those files from that instead of requiring them to be burned to a Disc. My new BD player had to have all those capabilities as well.

The BD390 had everything I wanted and more. It could read a very wide variety of files types and here's the good part. It can read those file from almost any PC, WIRELESS. Yes, it has built in 802.11 connectivity. If you don't want to use the wireless functionality, don't worry it works on standard 100Mb Ethernet too. All you need to install on the PC, if you already don't have it, is a UPnP media server such as Nero's Media home, which comes bundled with the BD390. Which means, you can browse photos, music and video clips. from a PC, without needing to burn them to a disc or hook the PC up to the TV. It has no problem displaying full size JPGs taken by an 8 Mega Pixel digital camera and it displays them in very high detail too (1080p), which is very nice. It has a handy slide show feature and it allows you to rotate and zoom in.

If you have an internet connection the BD390 can access Netflix, CinemaNow, Youtube without the aid of a PC. If your into Netflix or CinemaNow you can download movies directly to the BD390 and watch a wide assortment of new releases and older classics, for a price though. I think NetFlix has unlimited downloads starting at $7.99/mo. It's a little awkward using YouTube without a standard web browser but you adapt to it quickly. I downloaded Big Buck Bunny, a DivX-HD file from [...] just to see how it looked. While the clip was cheesy the picture quality was incredible. The BD390 had no trouble playing a file that freezes up on most of my computers. It plays Blu-ray discs well to. But after using the BD390 for a few months now I'm pretty sure ALL disc's DVD's and Blu-ray are going to be a thing of the past. With hard drive space getting cheaper than blank optical media I transferred most of my DVDs to my PC hard drive and the BD390 plays VOB files without a problem, which means you can keep them in MPEG2 format. You don't need to trans-code them. At today's HD prices your looking at less than 40 cents per film and I'm sure that's going to keep dropping. I've barely touched on what this device does.

This is definitely more than just a BD player, slightly more expensive but worth every penny.

I got the Philips DCP951/37 dvd player & ipod doc. Let me just say that I LOVE IT! I hooked my Ipod Touch to it right away & it worked beautifully. Then I tried the dvd player & it ran quietly & crystal clear. Just remember to take the paper out of the dvd player before you turn it on.

I was nervous about how one review said the screen was distorted if you weren't viewing head-on, but the only time you can't see the screen is when it's lying flat down & you're trying to watch the screen from a bottom angle. Now, I don't watch tv that way so that's not an issue for me. I'm so glad I decided to see for myself!

Anyway, I set up the player by standing it up on a flat surface & against a wall, like you would normally watch a tv. I can view it from far left to far right without any distortion, like a regular tv. So if you're trying to watch it with a group of people/kids, nobody should have a distorted view. I even stood up & looked down on it & still it wasn't distorted. It's only distorted if you try to view it from the bottom of the screen looking upward & I don't know anyone that watches tv like that, so it shouldn't be an issue. The remote also works great! The speakers are normal for a portable player & I'm probably going to invest in portable surround sound speakers for it. It also comes with attachments to hook it into a tv, which is useful if you have a bigger tv around to view. I can't find one thing I don't like about it! It's an asset to our Ipod Touch!!!

I think it's a terrific deal for the price! If you get this device, you won't be dissappointed! It does everything it's supposed to & with no issues. If I ever see this on clearance I'm going to stock up on a few so I have backups. It's going on EVERY vacation with us! The BD 390 works more like a computer than an appliance. It forces you to interact with it constantly, like a computer, with error messages and occasional bugs. The video/audio was good, but I ended up returning it. I replaced it with a Samsung BD-P1600, which is $50 less, and works much better. I should note that I don't use wireless, which would require a separate dongle on the BD-P1600, because I ran an Ethernet to my A/V stack (in part to troubleshoot the problems with the BD 390 below).

As other people have noted the BD 390 networking features don't work well. I've set up both wireless and wired, and in both cases the unit initially connects to your router without any problems, but then the connection goes dead for no apparent reason. It will connect long enough to pop up a notice that there is a firmware update, but then the connection will time out trying to download it. I tried several times and finally the update installed. The Netflix streaming function will download your list of movies, but then choke when you try to play them. For a unit that costs this much that is unacceptable bugginess. If the problem is that the servers are overwhelmed then they should have dedicated servers for their high-end products.

The BD 390 does not allow you to disable BD-Live. I want the movies to load as soon as possible, so I set the BD Live connection to "disallow". The BD 390 treats that option like it's an error. Every time I pop in a BD-Live disk I get a message telling me to allow the BD-Live connection (and it's not a disk menu message, it's a message from the BD 390). So my only option was to re-enable BD-Live but to unplug the network connection (which wasn't a big loss since it didn't work anyway). To offer a service is one thing but to force users to use it is unacceptable.

If you're watching a movie and you go into the DVD setup menu (for whatever reason) and then hit the "return" key, you would think it would return to the movie. Instead, it leaves you with a blank screen, like a computer desktop. You have to hit the Play button to keep watching your movie.

On a couple of occasions it popped up a message that a disk wasn't readable. On both occasions I popped out the disks to check that they were clean and seated in the tray properly but it still wouldn't read them. I had to turn the unit off/on and then it read the disk, suggesting it wasn't a disk problem it was a software problem. Essentially I had to "reboot" it.

I understand that technologically the box is a computer, but for this amount of money computer-like interaction should not be necessary. The options and services should certainly be available in the setup menu, but once you set your preferences it should work like an appliance.

The customer support is useless. Obviously some cube-farm of low-paid contract support staff who have no personal knowledge of the unit, searching through the same thin reference material you could find on the web site.

All that being said, the sound and video is good. If you have a receiver that can handle the uncompressed HD audio it's a noticeable improvement from old DVDs. (And if you have an older 1080i plasma, like I do, the picture still looks great.) The screen is bright and watchable in a minivan during the day. The pixel count is odd, something like 640 x 220 and the screen definitely has a "screen door" effect and lots of jaggies. I found the screen to be good enough, with the larger screen particular less of an eye strain than the smaller 7" screens on most portable players.

FYI, the iPod dock does not work with an iPhone. I'm not sure why, because an iPhone will fit in the dock. The capability of plugging in a 120GB iPod Classic loaded with all manner of video is a super cool feature that puts all other portable DVD players to shame.

The player makes up for its iPhone incompatibility with its ability to play video from SD card slot. I found the format support to be lacking, with the player only playing DIVX encoded videos or original DVD files from an SD card. For reference, I used the free program FFMPEGX on the Mac to convert to the format DIVX (mencoder). The video comes out as a compressed .avi file. I also used DVDRemaster to lower the bitrate of a DVD so it would fit on an SD card. The video looked fine on the low-res screen but the menu did not work at all. If you want to play video from the iPod dock and the SD card slot, you have to encode it twice, because iPod videos use different encoding. Not cool Philips!

Some folks knock the design but fail to appreciate its utility. On a desk, the player sits upright with a little stand and looks like a very thick digital photo frame. Sitting in a vehicle, the player is easy to hold in your lap. We could actually wedge it between the front seats of our minivan for viewing by our children in the back seats. We would prefer the player come with an over the seat strap to prevent it from becoming flying weapon.

Keep in mind that this players is going for about $100 now. You can get better specs out of more expensive players, but at what cost? For about $300, you could buy a netbook instead, and have even better options for portable video. 2009 has been a great year for Blue Ray players. Finally Blue ray players have come down substantiality in price and more importantly to me, have finally gotten fast. There was no way I was gonna get a player that took 1-4 minutes to play a blue ray disk. Fast play times and solid picture quality, were my priorities, and IMO there are four solid choices this year. The Lg BD390, Samsung BD-P3600, JVC XVBP1 and Oppo BDP-83 are all great fast players and all worthy of consideration.
All of these players are fast, generally within seconds of each other speed wise, and all offer great picture quality for both standard DVD's and Blue ray.
I choose the 390 in part due to good reviews and the fact the I got an LG TV. The 390, looks nice, and features some great menus that are color and easy to use. The player is fast and will play a standard DVD in about 10 seconds or less, and an average blue ray in 20 seconds or less. This is also the only blue ray player with a built in wifi tuner and the only one to use the wireless N standard, versus the slower G. You can also hook it up directly through an ethernet cable, which is how I did it.
You can plug your flash drive into the usb port, for vids, pics and mp3s. Pictures and music worked fine, but I've yet to be able to play any vids, and that's one of the knocks I have against this player. This other is not including a second usb port in back, to allow the flash drive to remain plugged in, like the Samsung and Oppo player do.
The biggest flaw of this unit is the remote, which is one of the worst I've seen for any product. It's adequate for just using the 390, but completely sucks otherwise. Too many of the buttons are small, and there is no backlighting. Worst of all is the bottom part that slides down, with difficultly, to review a bunch of tiny TV buttons that are way too small and cramped together to use. You would not want to use this remote for your TV.
Flaws aside, this is one of the fastest players, has good picture quality, good easy to use color menus, sports an ethernet and usb port, a built in wifi tuner, and features Netflix, Cinemnow and Youtube.
My first choice though was actually the 3600. It can be had for about $50 cheaper then the 390 and I like the slim profile and sleek glossy black look better then the other 3 players. The Samsung also features two usb ports, one in front and in back. The back one is useful for either plugging in the wifi dongle or a flash drive, for pics, vids, and mp3s. The Samsung also features, Netflix and Pandora. Unfortunately Samsung has a history of problems every year with its Blue Ray players, and there are a number of complaints about problems connecting wirelessly and disk compatibility issues.
The XVBP1 is a good player, and very similar to the LG without the wireless, and the Netflix, Cinemanow, Youtube. This player actually looks quite similar to the 390 and even features similar menus, though not as good. The XVP1 is about 200 cheaper and if you don't care about wireless and Netflix, this is a solid fast player and a great buy.
The Oppo is of course the videophiles player, and the best player for both Blue Ray and standard DVD's, with it's Anchor Bay processing. It plays the most formats, and also features 2 usb ports like the Samsung. I bought this item when it was an Amazon Deal of the Day, because it seemed like an excellent buy. I was sort of surprised that after a few weeks, the deal price ended up being the permanent price, but that's not that big a deal.

I love the iPod connectivity, which is the main reason I bought the item. It works like a charm. After spending the better part of two days trying to get various movie formats to play using the DVD player, I gave up. The unit plays wonderfully using the iPod or store purchased DVDs, but I would not rely on it to play other file formats.

Several other reviewers remarked on not being able to see the screen from the side, but this wasn't an issue for me. I don't find it any more difficult to view the screen on this unit than I do on any other portable DVD player or my laptop.

I have another, older portable DVD player and this unit runs faster and has a superior image quality.

PROS: Excellent iPod integration, loads quickly, nice display

Based on several weeks of reading online reviews from multiple sources I settled on the LG BD390. My major requirements were finding a player that streamed Netflix, has top-notch image quality, and loaded Blu-Ray discs quickly. Found it!

In less than 10 minutes I turned on the player and configured it on my network. It found the network and I entered the WEP Key - bingo - online. I then downloaded the latest software update. It took about 15 minutes to download, but completed and installed successfully.

After updating the software I went to Netflix in the menu and it gave me an activation code which I then entered on the Netflix website. 10 seconds later, activation was complete. I put Die Hard in my Watch Instantly queue, ran back to the TV, and like magic, Die Hard appeared in my Netflix movie list. Hit play and it started streaming within 15 seconds. Couldn't ask for this to be any easier!

Next I loaded Pirates of the Carribean on Blu-Ray and within 20 seconds the video playback began - completely tolerable (and better than I expected!). Picture quality is solid, sound is great (pushing it thru a Denon 7.1 receiver), and the menu system is slick and easy to use. I haven't even opened the manual.

I bought this to replace a Sonic Impact V55. The interface is fantastic. The design is elegant. However, it is made more cheaply than any piece of electronics in this price range should be. I'm worried I'll break it just taking the iPod in and out of the drawer. If there was another viable alternative, I'd buy it in a second. I bought this device primarily for the DVD function, the ipod connectivity was just an added bonus. I never even got to try out the ipod functionality because this device couldn't even play my store-bought DVDs. Admittedly, I did read the negative reviews on here before making the decision to purchase this item, and I figured I could deal with the bad viewing angle and volume...as well as the cheap plastic ipod drawer. For the price, I was willing to overlook these "extras" for the luxury of having a 9" screen.
After receiving the player I popped in a DVD and I was thoroughly enjoying the show until about 20 minutes into the movie when the screen just froze. Immediately restarting the device didn't help matters and it refused to recognize any DVDs. The next day I tried again and I got the same end-result....everything works fine but then about 20-30 minutes into a movie the player overheats and doesn't play DVDs. This happenned about 5 times, and now I'm about to return the device. I think it may be an engineering problem...and perhaps this is the reason why this Philips player is one of the only to have the DVD drive and the screen back-to-back....these 2 elements are prone to overheating and the small device doesn't have any way of cooling down.

I'm very happy with this product. You can't beat the price and it's a good little player.

The only downsides are that it is made of fairly cheap (and probably easily broken) materials, and some of the menus and buttons are not super fast or well thought out.

This is a great unit. I bought it in spite of the fact that several people here said that it does not play nice with Apple routers. I have two routers at home, one for an 802.11b/g network and an Airport Extreme for my 802.11n network. Sure enough, when I set up the BD390 it could "see" my Verizon FiOS Actiontec router but not my Airport. I emailed and called LG. Both times I was told that the unit did not support Apple products. Then I saw a review here by Anthony Pantliano who said his unit connected to his Airport out of the box. So I emailed him. Together we discovered that the BD390 will connect to the AirPort but only when the wireless mode is either 802.11n only (2.4GHz), 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible), or 802.11n (a compatible). The 802.11n only (5GHz) setting WILL NOT WORK with the LG. So, problem solved. So far I'm very happy with the unit. NetFlix streaming is much better than I expected. I really wasn't even looking for a Blu-ray player, but I needed a DVD player and didn't see the logic in paying money for outmoded technology when for more, quite a bit more though, I could get Blu-ray and Netflix streaming. I'm very glad I made the decision to spend the extra money.

It came down to two players for me, the Samsung BD-P1600 or the LG. I decided to go with the LG BD 390 because, unlike the Samsung, it has built in wireless b/g/n and 1GB of memory. On the Samsung you have to buy a wireless dongle and a flash USB drive for memory.

The LG is very nicely styled with only 6 buttons on the front of the unit, the playback controls that light up in blue and power and tray open/close buttons on the top edge. The display on the front of the player is very bright and fairly large. It's very easy to see. I also like the fact that when you press a button on the remote a little indicator lights up in the display to let you know. This way you don't wonder whether the player didn't get the command or if it's something you cannot do in the current mode. The remote is a decent size and has a logical button layout (see photo).

Picture quality on my 32" 720p LCD TV is great. Blu-ray discs and regular DVDs look flawless. Additionally, when you take out a disc you haven't finished watching and put it back in later, even if you've turned the player off, it will start up where you left off, nice. Netflix streams in very high quality (up to 720p HD) over my cable high-speed network. The Netflix activation process is very simple as well. My wireless router is an Apple AirPort Extreme with WPA security and the LG wirelessly linked up with it easily. You can also access YouTube, CinemaNow, and a local media server with the LG. Of these, I've only tried the YouTube player and found it worked well. Finally, updates for the player's software can be easily downloaded over the wireless network through the set-up menu.

The connections on the rear are very comprehensive and included HDMI, Component and Composite video, Digital and Optical audio, and 7.1 surround sound outputs. There is also an Ethernet port if you prefer to use the player on a wired network.

The only negative I have about the LG is that the remote is quite cheesy in construction and does not feel up to the caliber of a player of this cost. Also the player itself sounds a little strained when the drawer opens and closes. I'm hoping that this is not a sign of bad things to come.

All in all...Blu-ray, plus a seamless Netflix experience, all wrapped up in a stylish box.

Note to Apple AirPort Extreme users: Someone read my review and contacted me saying that they were not able to get the LG to wirlessly connected to their AirPort, what was I doing differently? Well after some playing around with the AirPort Extreme's settings I came to the conclusion that the LG will only connect to the AirPort when the wireless mode is either 802.11n only (2.4GHz), 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible), or 802.11n (a compatible). Amazing blu ray player. My waiting and research paid off. You can't go wrong with this player. The connection was easy to my 50" Panasonic Viera Plasma and the wireless connection considering I am just a novice. My LG BD390 output were all 1080p resolutions on my Blu Ray disk, regular DVD disk and my Netflix streaming video.

Out of the box this player gave the message NO DISK with Blu Ray and DVDs. It also recognised my network once and then never again (despite resetting router etc). Customer support was worth than useless: the telephone support gave up after telling me to unplug it. The online support recommended cleaning the disks and connecting directly to the TV. I pointed out that the NO DISK message was obviously obtained with or without the TV and that, as I had already noted, I had tried 8 different Blu Rays and DVDs, most of which were fresh out of their packaging. Did they really think that all 8 were so dirty that they would not play? To add insult to injury the only redress offered by support was to send the player to LG for diagnosis! I went back and forth on this because of the reviews about the picture quality and build. I am glad I bought it. My son is 3 and burned through the last "video player" option, a V55 that had the iPod dock. All of my video is iPod formatted so a "video dock" was a necessity. I could not be happier with this Philips except for one draw back. It has a "flip out" stand on the back, this is useless to me as the primary viewing is done in the car. I was hoping for some sort of attachment point, but there was not one. Short story, went to Lowe's, bought some "velcro" fastners with sticky back and a piece of bungee. I then made a loop to hang around the headrest and the player attaches with the "velcro" and is perfect. Since it is "velcro", I can detach and take with. As for viewing, I can see it at about 145deg, the speakers are just right (he can hear and I can still have the radio on). I will look for another one of these next year when they release a new model and buy one for back-up instead of spending 6 months trying to search out a replacement.

I am going to skip over the review of the BD and DVD playback features (which are both excellent, by the way) and get to the point right away. So here it goes:

NetFlix Streaming
This is where this player shines. Yes, its not perfect; selections are still limited; audio is still two channel; movies can't be added to your queue on the fly; rewinding and ff is still a bit awkward...but boy you certainly get the feeling that you are witnessing the end of the DVD era. Picture quality in my opinion is at least as good as DVDs if not better. And most importantly, there is no so called "Netflix guilt" involved (you know what I am talking about - you watch "Step Brothers" which just came in today while "kite runner" sits on the shelf for a month unwatched). No such problems here. Fifteen minutes into a movie you realize its not your thing, you move on. There is always something else.

YouTube
This was the big feature which made me trade my Panasonic BD player for this one. But unfortunately once the novelty of watching YouTube on big screen wore off (in about 15 minutes), it was just not worth the effort to "search" for new and fun things to watch. The search metaphor robs you of the most common entry into the YouTube world - a link. Without a link to click on, the instant gratification part of YouTube is gone. Awkwardly searching YouTube using a virtual keyboard with a remote feels like work. Obviously some kind of voice enabled search technology (possibly with a tiny microphone integrated with the remote itself) is what will make this work. Hey, wait a minute - did I just give LG the next big user interface idea?

Alright, this one is a great idea really gone bad. If you have ever played with Apple TV, Windows Media Extenders (XBox 360 is one), or Sonos, you know this implementation is a non-starter. The strict folder based browsing of pictures or music is tiresome. No playlist support; no alternate browsing by album or rating or genre; no ability to search for new music - thanks, but no thanks. LG, please go back and try again (or look at Sonos for inspiration).

Don't get me wrong. This is a great machine - just needs a bit more polish.

Amazon carried this product so I had ordered. When I got this prodcut, there were scratches on the side and battery was almost fully recharged. This obviously tells me that the product had been opened and used. I purchased this new and yet they sent a used one. My confidence in amazon.com is slowly starting to deteriorate. This is the second time I've been disappointed...

As for the proudct, the price is reasonable for the features it offers. Video quality is poor but what do you expect out of portable DVD player. Other DVD player within this price range have poor video quality as well. You'll need to spend over $300 to get a good quality video. As for DivX format, it wasn't able to play any .avi formats from SD card. I was hoping it would but didn't expect it to. It said on the proudct that it will only play DivX VOD which you have to download from DivX site. I think this product will do if you intend to use it while traveling. My main purpose was to use it in my minivan. I bought the bag that will mount unit but it was just a pain getting in on and off so I had to find other creative ways to mount it. Day 1: Okay, first, out of the box it contains: the unit, 12v car charger, Wall plug, AV cable, and a Neoprene cover (still glad I got the XDS-9 Neoprene DVD Player Case (Blue) anyway)

Unit: Controls are just fine. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. The kickstand is right next to the dvd player and holds the unit just fine. The screen does go funny when you look at it from below. But left, right and above, it's fully visible at all angles. Front controls: menu, play/pause, directional arrows with ok in center, fwd and rev. These all do different things depending on the mode your in. They let you navigate the screen when in ipod and SD mode, and they are the DVD controls in disk mode. The right side is the iPod dock, the top has source, monitor, and power buttons as well as the DVD release. The DVD door opens in back, the spindle holds the disc firm. Left side: dual earphone jacks, AV in, AV out, volume wheel and SD card slot; plus power.

iPod: Okay, the dock allows you to slide your ipod inside the unit and control everything (except photos) from the main screen: movies, playlists, podcasts, etc. It defaults to widescreen so you have to hit the monitor button to see them right. But it seems to function completely in all modes. It comes with cradle adaptors for different ipods and the remote fits in the iPod Touch cradle as though it were made for it.

DVD: plays nice, use either the front controls or the remote. Seems fully functional. Played my home burned DVD nicely. Add the AV cable and it outputs to a larger screen perfectly.

SD: I recorded a movie clip with my still camera and tried to play it. No sound. Oh well, I didn't really need sound anyway for my purposes, but clearly there are some file compatibility issues that will frustrate some folks.

Overall, yes, it feels light and cheesy, but it's well thought out, and works pretty much as advertised. Plus being able to present DVDs, iPod movies, even photo slideshows makes this a steal. Like others, I had a problem with sound synchronization on some (not all) blu-ray discs. There was no such problem when I played the same discs in my PS3. On some discs, I had to try several times to get them to load - no problem with the PS3. I bought the 390 because of its ability to bitstream 7.1 Dolby and DTS-HD to my Onkyo receiver (PS3 can only send 7.1 PCM DTS-HD). I wanted to give the decoding circuitry in the receiver a chance to do its thing (although theoretically, there shouldn't be much of a difference in sound quality). The 390 does indeed bitstream both codecs. The built in wireless is a very neat feature - it's fun to be able to listen to music or view photos that are on my big computer upstairs. Online Netflix movies sounds like a good idea but the current poor quality of the picture and sound (on any streaming device) make this feature valueless to me.
